Life and Career

 

The 70s

1971 - 1975:

Enuda High School. 

Model student, in character and learning. Best (straight A) all-round student for five years - first position in every exam; finishing with distinction, despite taking an incredible load of nine courses with equal spread between the arts and sciences.

Librarian. Editor-in-Chief. President Literary & Debating Society.

1975 -1976:

Engineer-in-Training, Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, Enugu

1976 -

Admitted to several universities but chose University of Nigeria, Nsukka for Electrical/Electonics Engineering. Quickly won two scholarships; one of them from ELF Oil major.

A prolific writer on campus.

A leader of numerous student groups, almost always invited to lead rather than vieing to lead.

The 80s

1980

Won the top prize in a nationwide Short Story Competition organised by the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, Lagos. His winning story, Together Forever, was broadcast, prime time, on Radio Nigeria nationwide.

1981:

Graduated top tier in Electrical/Electronics Engineering from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Was interviewed and offered provisional appointment by Shell before he even wrote his final exams. Subsequently landed four other jobs, including Trainee Engineering Manager at UAC of Nigeria.

1981 - 1982:

NYSC at Shell, Lagos

1981:

Joined Omezi Ebiri Age Group of Igbere as a foundation member.

1982:

Became a regular Management Staff at Shell Nigeria in PortHarcourt after a brief stint with UAC in Lagos.

1985:

First overseas outing: Major 3-month Telecommunications course on Microwave Engineering at Cable & Wireless College, Penzance, UK. Classmates were from all over the world. Great grades.

1987:

Got Married at Aba.

1988:

First Child in PHC

The 90s

1990:

Moved to Shell Nigeria Western Division, Warri to become the company’s sole specialist technical trainer on Telecommunications at a major inflection point for Telecoms technology in Shell - moving from analog to digital communications.

1991:

Second son, Warri

1992:

First Overseas Assignment: The Hague, Netherlands, as the Telecom expert on technical bid evaluations for NLNG.

1993:

First Overseas posting: Sarawak Shell, Miri, Malaysia. A four-year posting, leading Datanetworking revamp of Sarawak Shell.

1994:

His country home was built in Igbere.

1997:

Returned to Shell Nigeria, Lagos and assumed IT Projects Lead role for Lagos and Abuja, covering both Telecommunications and Computing infrastructures.

1997:

Published his first book: Ahead (a collection of his poems)

The 2000s

1999:

Transferred to Shell Nigeria, Port Harcourt to become Head of IT Strategy and Planning.

2001:

Major 3-month overseas assignment, The Hague, Netherlands, leading a Capability group in a Strategy Review of Information Technology function for Shell Exploration & Production business worldwide.

2001:

Led a 3-month exercise to review and revamp IT Strategy for Shell Nigeria, culminating in complete overhauling of Shell IT organization throughput Nigeria.

2002:

His Lekota Springs Hotel opened.

2003:

Second Overseas Posting, this time with Shell Affiliate - Petroleum Development Oman, Muscat, Oman, initially as Head of Telecoms, but soon as Head of IT Infrastructure, with responsibilities for both Telecoms and Computing technologies. The 4-year assignment grew to seven years at the request of the host company.

2006:

Published his first novel: Their Son, Her Brother.

2004-2009:

Leader of both African and Nigerian communities in the Sultanate of Oman.

2009:

Second degree - MBA from the University of Wales focused on Information Technology -  Alignment of IT STRATEGY with BUSINESS PRIORITIES: Transforming the IT Department from a Reactive Service Provider to a Proactive Strategic Business Partner – An Oil Company perspective. The research outcome was largely implemented at PDO Oman.

The 201xs

2010:

Third Overseas posting: Shell International, The Hague, Netherlands, as an IT Programme Manager in charge of migrating all regular and technical computers in Shell E&P worldwide, from one operating system to another. Also had responsibility for managing the entire portfolio of IT Infrastructure projects in Shell’s E&P business worldwide, with an annual budget of over $100million.

2011:

First son graduates in Economics from University of Toronto. (Has since become a Cloud Computing expert at IBM Canada.)

2013:

Fourth Overseas Posting: Shell Canada, Calgary, as Global Delivery Manager for Field Telecommunications serving the entire Shell Group, covering all Shell businesses - Upstream, Downstream, Projects and Technologies, etc.

 

2013:

Second son graduates in Chemical Engineering from MIT, Massachusetts.

 

2016:

Retirement from Shell on his 60th Birthday which was the mandatory retirement age at Shell Nigeria.
